Most major journals publishing oceanography research do not require authors to use the International System of Units (Systeme International d'Unités, or SI), and many authors and editors prefer non-SI units for much oceanographic work, according to a recent AGU survey.
Of the 16 journals or publishers in various fields of geophysics that responded to a December 1981 mail survey, 9 encourage authors to use SI, 5 require them to use it (with some exceptions), 1 accepts papers without SI units although, its formal policy is to require them, and 1, which now has no policy, said it expects to require SI within 5 years.
