Viking snaps over 50,000 Mars photos



More than 50,000 photographs of Mars, taken by the Viking spacecraft from 1976 through 1980, have been processed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Viking 1, launched August 20, 1975, arrived at Mars on June 19, 1976. The Viking 1 lander separated from the orbiter and landed in the Chryse Planitia region on July 20, 1976. Viking 2 was launched September 9, 1975, and entered orbit around Mars on August 7, 1976. The Viking 2 lander touched down in the Utopia Planitia region of the planet on September 3, 1976.
