This book is a compilation of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Kollekolle, Copenhagen, Denmark in August 1980 and represents the latest in a series of NATO Advanced Study Institutes. The editor, Leif Bjorno, has organized the 59 papers into five subdivisions: (1) ‘Underwater Sound Sources and Propagation,’ (2) ‘Transducer Technology,’ (3) ‘Mathematical Fundamentals of Signal Processing,’ (4) ‘Computational Background of Signal Processing,’ and (5) ‘Contributions from Other Fields.’ Although the book contains underwater acoustics in its title, the great bulk of the book (some 65%) is devoted to aspects of signal processing per se or related topics. Following most of the papers are a few pages presenting the authors' answers to questions asked by various attendees at the conference.
