Ocean research conducted for the subseabed disposal program

Abstract

Research on the feasibility of using certain geological formations beneath the ocean as a repository for disposal of high-level radioactive wastes is presently being conducted by a number of nations. High-level wastes (HLW) are either spent reactor fuel or reprocessed spent reactor fuel. The objective of subseabed emplacement is to contain and isolate wastes from the biosphere. A repository located in deep-ocean sediments is analogous to a land-based repository except that the geology is covered with about 5,000 m of seawater.
