Abstract

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has received a gift of $70 million to build a 10-m optical telescope, the world's largest, to be situated atop a 4145-m-high ridge on Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii. The gift—said to be the largest private gift ever donated for a scientific project—was made by the Keck Foundation, an organization founded by the late W. M. Keck, an oil wildcatter and founder of Superior Oil Company.

The new telescope will be able to see up to 12 billion light years away and will be used to study ancient galaxies and the structure of the universe. The facility will also have infrared capabilities for research on new stars forming in our galaxy.
