Abstract

Changes in the operation of the Mount Wilson and Las Campanas Observatories, operated by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, were recently announced. Funding priorities are being shifted to the Las Campanas, Chile, observatory, where the institution intends to begin using the “latest technologies” for research. Some of the new instrumentation being considered for Las Campanas includes charge-coupled devices (CCD's) as well as upgraded computer equipment to handle the increasing flow of numerical data. The institution also announced the possibility, in the long term, of building a “major new telescope” at the Las Campanas site; several different types are under consideration.
