Peconic bays estuarine studies

Abstract

The Marine Sciences Research Center (MSRC) of the State University of New York at Stony Brook has been involved in a study of the processes of motion, mixing, and exchange in the Peconic Bays estuarine system. This system, located at the east end of Long Island, N.Y., is composed of the tidal reaches of the Peconic River, Flanders Bay, Great Peconic Bay, Little Peconic Bay, Shelter Island Sound, and the several small bays and harbors adjacent to these waterways. The Peconic Bays estuary connects with Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean through Gardiners Bay in the east and through the Shinnecock Canal and Shinnecock Bay in the south.
