Rising lake threatens area

Abstract

The Great Salt Lake may have become too great for Salt Lake City's good: The lake has risen more than 2 m in the last 2 years, causing millions of dollars in damage to the surrounding area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Officials in Utah are now contemplating drastic measures—including pumping water from the lake into the desert some 48 km away—to bring the lake down to size.
