E. B. White died in Brooklin, Maine, on October 1, 1985. We who profess an affinity for the sea have lost a fellow practitioner. White's tools were simple and eloquent words, not ships and equations, and he is best known for his writing in other fields. Yet we should also remember that Andy White wrote quiet and sensitive essays about the sea, and there is no doubt that his overflowing naturalist's portfolio was infused with an abiding love and respect for wind and water.
