Climatic effects of nuclear war

At the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics (IAMAP)/International Association for Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) Joint Assembly, August 5–16, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, symposium M-14, on the climatic effects of nuclear war, attracted enough papers for a full day plus an overflow in precis/poster form. Hans Bolle (Institut für Meteorologie und Geophysik, Universität Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria) opened the session with some discussion of the sensitive nature of the subject as a matter for purely scientific investigation. Barrie Pittock (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Melbourne, Australia) then gave some background to the very rapid development of studies in this field since the seminal paper of Crutzen and Birks [1982] appeared.
