Income from publications supports the overall operations of AGU. In 1985, 81% of AGU's income came from publications, and only 63% of AGU's direct expenses were attributable to publishing and the management of the publications. The net of the publication-derived income and expense supports educational and other programs that are essential to a scientific society but that produce no income.
The second largest source of revenue for the Union is page charge income. In 1985, income from page charges was $1.9 million. The largest single source of revenue is institutional subscriptions, at $3.4 million in 1985. Figure 1 shows sources of revenue and expense in 1985.
