Abstract

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) recently signed a new agreement for scientific cooperation with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The 2-year agreement provides for a program for exchange of research scientists, a program of bilateral scientific workshops, exchange visits by members of both academies, and development of cooperative research activities in nonsensitive fields.

Unlike previous agreements, this one calls for an emphasis on regular meetings of academy officers, invitational visits, and joint selection of participants and mutually beneficial scientific topics for workshops. The new agreement also gives provisions for suspension of “unproductive projects” and for formal evaluation of the program.
