State and local programs that provide for the protection of groundwater as a resource have greater potential for long-term success than those that focus on remedial or cleanup action, according to a new report by a National Research Council (NRC) committee that analyzed 10 state groundwater programs and three local programs. In its report, scheduled to be released in mid-July, the committee concluded that no single program had all of the elements needed to be comprehensive but that many approaches now in use “show much promise in protecting groundwater quality.”
