The Coastal States Organization presented Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-S.C.) with a special recognition award on July 25, 1986, for his “leadership and outstanding contributions” to the national coastal zone management program. Hollings became known as the “father of coastal zone management” for his role in drafting the original Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972. He played an important role in the law's reauthorization in 1980 and 1986, according to an announcement from the Coastal States Organization.
