A volcanic crater lake in Cameroon that emitted a deadly cloud of toxic gas on August 21, 1986, is currently under study by a team of scientists that was scheduled to arrive at the site on August 29. The team was sent by the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance to try to identify the gases released, determine the mechanism that produced the event, and assess any remaining hazard in the area.
