This week, the General Assembly of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) will consider the proposal for an International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP). The main goal of IGBP would be to describe and understand the interactive physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the global earth system, the unique environment for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions (Eos, April 1, 1986, p. 157). Pertinent research initiatives will be presented by the Ad Hoc Planning Group on Global Change, established by ICSU at its 1984 General Assembly.
