Deep Observation and Sampling of the Earth's Continental Crust, Inc. (DOSECC) recently began drilling a 5-km hole near the San Andreas fault in California to try to learn why the surface heat flow measured there fails to correlate with that predicted by mathematical models of the fault. The scientific drilling project is the first major drilling activity to be conducted by DOSECC, a corporation formed by a consortium of universities.
