NWS winter weather forecast

The Great Lakes area, the East Coast, and the southern rim of the United States may experience relatively stormy, wet weather this winter, according to the winter weather forecast for the continental United States from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service (NWS; see Figure 1). The NWS statement, which predicted average conditions in December, January , and February, also said that the south central portion of the United States has the highest chance of colder than normal winter weather, while the season is expected to bring milder than normal conditions west of the Rockies (Figure 2).

The precipitation prediction is the “more interesting, stronger” part of the forecast, according to Donald L. Gilman, chief of the NWS Prediction Branch. This winter's temperature predictions are more cautious than usual, he said.
