GOFS long lead time activities

The National Science Foundation, with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is planning U.S. participation in the Global Ocean Flux Study (GOFS). GOFS is scheduled to take place during the 1990s. The goal of GOFS is to identify and quantify the physical, chemical, and biological processes that control biogeochemical cycling in the ocean, as well as their interaction with the global atmosphere, so that we can understand the processes governing the production and fate of biogenic materials in the sea well enough to predict their influences on and responses to global-scale perturbations. GOFS is a key element of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP).
