Nearly half of the nation's rivers and streams reported well above average flows during December, which made a wet finish for a year that was extremely dry for much of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast United States, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS hydrologists said that 49% (85) of the 173 key index streamflow-gaging stations in the United States and Puerto Rico reported flows that were well within the highest 25% of historic records for December.
