Abstract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the French space agency, the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), signed a memorandum of understanding on March 23, 1987, for a joint satellite oceanographic mission that is planned to make observations of ocean circulation on a global scale. The mission, planned for a late 1991 launch, is presently called the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX)/ Poseidon.
