Lightning networks detect storms

Systems used to detect cloud-to-ground lightning flashes are proving to be “a tremendous supplement” to radar and satellite information in forecasting thunderstorms, according to a meteorologist who uses the new systems. Some of the benefits of this technology for weather forecasters, air traffic controllers, and power companies will be discussed in a session on “Meteorological Applications of Lightning Detection Systems” on Wednesday, May 20, at the AGU Spring Meeting in Baltimore, Md.
