This is a very comprehensive effort in numerous important areas, such as interannual variability, regional circulation, climatology, tropical glaciers, and past climates. The emphasis, in most of these areas, would be called “climatological.” It is quite detailed, full of adequate references and historical accounts. The approach is descriptive. However, in many sections the paragraphs are too full of authors' names with only very brief explanations of their findings.
