1986 was a year of steady progress with some very bright spots:
- Membership grew at more than 5% annually, continuing a 5-year trend. This period rivals the significant growth during the IGY and immediately after it and allowed membership to reach more than 20,000 (see Figure 1 and Table 1).
- There was a sharp increase in the number of published pages (Figure 2).
- A significant increase in meeting participation was seen.
- Costs were contained so that the Union finished the year somewhat ahead of its budget, permitting another significant contribution to reserves.
