Atmospheric scientists will return to McMurdo Base in the Antarctic this week to probe more deeply into the mysteries of Earth's ozone hole. Ground-based experiments will be complemented by in situ measurements of stratospheric ozone from high-altitude research aircraft flying through the zone of greatest depletion of the gas, some 20 km above the ground. The results of this work could provide conclusive evidence for or against a human cause for the ozone decline.
