Dynamic Meteorology

The Glossary of Meteorology (American Meteorological Society, Boston, Mass., 1959) defines dynamic meteorology as “the study of atmospheric motions as solutions of the fundamental equations of hydrodynamics or other system of equations appropriate to special conditions.” This definition fits Panchev's book quite well, although the author prefers to call its subject “fluid dynamics of the atmosphere.” The emphasis in this volume, however, is on the formal treatment of equations rather than on the physical explanation of atmospheric motions. The book has been written on the basis of classes on dynamic meteorology taught at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. In this respect, the book also gives readers outside of this scientific community some insight into Eastern European education on dynamic meteorology.
