IUGS Group gathers geodata

An international group of scientists organized under the aegis of the International Union of Geological Science (IUGS) will try to inventory existing geoscience data bases around the world and test the waters for a new information service based on ongoing research.

The IUGS Joint Working Group, composed of geologists and information scientists from Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, France, Italy, and the United States, met September 14–16, 1987, in Vienna, Austria. The group put together a questionnaire to help determine the extent and distribution worldwide of factual and bibliographic information in the geosciences. Ghassan Rassam, group member and AGU Director of Public Information and Marketing, said, “Our intent is to increase the availability of scientific information to earth scientists, and to decrease the redundancy of different data bases now in place.”
