The International Symposium on Water for the Future, held in Rome during April 1987, examined the history of hydrology and water resources development. The symposium was convened jointly with the International Association for Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and the International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR). IAHS prepublished papers in a volume entitled Hydrology in Perspective, while IAHR was responsible for prepublishing Water Resources Development in Perspective. The papers covered a very wide range of topics—everything from the hydrological activities of the Aztec civilization to hydrological data collection by satellite.
