Abstract

The United Nations will participate in the 1992 International Space Year's mission to planet Earth through a program sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Geological Survey. The U.N. General Assembly endorsed ISY in December 1989 and decided to focus its activities on education and training programs for developing nations.

Through the program, U.S. environmental satellite information will be transferred to U.N. agencies and training will be offered to U.N. member nations on how to use the information for environmental protection and resource management. Program objectives include locating pollution sources and evaluating coastal erosion, deforestation, changes in agricultural productivity, and urban growth.
