Dyfrig Jones, Head of the Space Plasma Physics Group at the British Antarctic Survey, died August 6, 1989.
Dyfrig was born August 16, 1940, in the fishing village of Crwbin, Pembrokeshire, South Wales. He attended Cardigan Grammar School and went on to read physics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, completing a Ph.D. in experimental physics in 1964 on interpreting ionospheric drift data. The skills he learned during his Ph.D. work, which entailed the design of radio and signal processing equipment and the development of new computer methods for signal correlation and spectral analysis, laid the foundation for his career.
