New Geophysics Chair for University of Alaska

Eleven Japanese corporations will establish an academic chair at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, in honor of Japanese geophysicist Kyoo Wadati. The chair funds will support two professors whose work is related to the global environment. Wadati is noted for discovering earthquakes at depths greater than 300 kilometers, thus making a pioneering contribution to the concept of plate tectonics. The belt of such deep-focus earthquakes is called the Wadati-Benioff zone.
