Status of hydrology examined by NRC

“The central role of water in the evolution and operation of the Earth system provides a rationale for seeing hydrologic science as a geoscience of stature equal to that of the atmospheric ocean, and solid Earth sciences.” This is the theme of the recently released National Research Council's report, Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences.

The report was prepared for NRC by the Committee on Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences. Frank Press, chairman of NRC, said the report is “intended to help guide science and educational policy decisions and to provide a scientific framework and educational policy for scientists, educators, and students making career plans.”
