Merit review research got a vote of confidence in the Senate earlier this month, but the final level of support that academic research will receive from the Defense Department will not be known until after Labor Day. The Senate voted August 11 to restore $821 million of the $900 million that was unexpectedly cut from the Defense Appropriations Bill in the House before the July 4 holiday. If the cuts remain, some areas of geophysical science may be in jeopardy.
