While there is a push to transfer Earth-observing data to the commercial sector, such initiatives do not include the illegal sale of restricted information from the U.S. Department of Defense. Unfortunately Andrew N. Fox, a former Cornell University graduate student, had to learn this distinction the hard way. Fox has pleaded guilty to using such data for a profitmaking scheme. Fox reportedly was part of a team of professors and students in Cornell's geological sciences department that was using Defense Mapping Agency data to study the topography of various regions.
