Abstract

During the week of July 24, three Congressional subcommittees held hearings on bills to dismantle the Commerce Department, whose agencies include NOAA. Two House subcommittees held a joint hearing on H.R. 1756. The Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs also held a hearing on S. 929, a bill to eliminate the Department and splinter its activities. Sen. William Roth (R-Del.), Chairman of the Senate Committee, said that dismantling Commerce is "an idea whose time has come." However, Roth does not support S. 929 because it would split the Department's activities.
