Thanks to the keen hearing of U.S. Navy surveillance instruments, ocean scientists in the Pacific Northwest are getting a rare opportunity to study undersea hydrothermal venting in progress. Twice in the past month, scientists have been able to pull together spur-of-the-moment trips to the Gorda Ridge, 150 km off the coast of Oregon, to glimpse underwater volcanism first-hand.
