Global fishing fleet over capacity

World fishing fleet overcapacity is five times greater than previously estimated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and two and a half times greater than is needed to catch fish at a sustainable rate, according to a new study released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on August 18.

According to the report, this means that nearly two-thirds of the fishing fleet worldwide could be eliminated and still allow enough fishing boats to catch all the fish that can be sustainably harvested.
