Scientists in Australia say they have discovered another chemical that is depleting the ozone in the upper atmosphere. They say it is not controlled by the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, and has an as-yet unknown source.
“The rapid growth of halon-1202 comes as a surprise to us,” says Paul Frasier, an atmospheric scientist with Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).
