NASA helps the Star Spangled Banner

A camera developed by NASA to explore Mars is helping to preserve the Star Spangled Banner, the U.S. flag that flew during the War of 1812 and inspired the lyrics to the national anthem.

The Acousto-Optic Imaging Spectrometer (AImS) can detect deteriorated and soiled areas not visible to the human eye, such as moisture and oils on the wool surface of the flag.
