Abstract

When a Japanese airplane ran into severe turbulence above the northwest Pacific Ocean east of Japan on January 20, 20 passengers were injured.

Now, a team of scientists is sending probes into turbulent areas of the jet stream over the Pacific to learn more about clear air turbulence and the structure of the jet stream. The data will be used to verify experimental turbulence prediction models and learn how operational National Weather Service forecast models might be improved to give pilots more accurate warnings of turbulence.
