On July 20, US. Secretary of Education Richard Riley commemorated the 30th anniversary of the first landing on the Moon by appointing members of a new National Commissionon Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century and calling for a commitment to improve science and mathematics education.

The commission, chaired by former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn, will develop a strategy to raise the quality of mathematics and science teaching across the nation, and will submit its findings in the fall of 2000.
