A new report by the National Research Council says that the United States' ability to convert science and technology into new products, jobs, and profits is being fueled by a strong research and development base and by a favorable economic climate.

But the report cautions that serious deficiencies in pre-college education and wavering support for basic research may erode the nation's ability to achieve sustained economic growth and improved living standards in the next century.
