The AGU All-Union Committee for Mineral and Rock Physics will present their 1999 Outstanding Student Awards to Tomoaki Kubo and Daisuke Yamazaki during the M& RP and Nonlinear Geophysics Reception. The reception will be held during the AGU 1999 Fall Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., USA. Tomoaki Kubo is being recognized for his work in the experimental transformation kinetics of mantel minerals. Tomoaki received both his B.S.and M.S. in petrology and geochemistry from Tohoku University Japan, in 1994 and 1996, respectively He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the institute of Mineralogy, Petrology, and Economic Geology, Tohoku University under the supervision of Eiji Ohtani. Tomoaki is being honored for the first in situ determinations of transformation kinetics in some key mantel minerals using a multi-anvil device and synchrotron radiation. His work is cited as a pioneering effort to understand the effects of mineral kinetics on subduction zone processes.
