U.S. toxic emissions top 7 billion pounds

Publicly reported toxic emissions released by industries in the United States total 7.3 billion pounds annually, nearly three times more than an earlier figure released under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Toxic Release Inventory.

Seven major industrial sectors publicly reporting their discharges for the first time in the 1998 Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) issued in May account for most of the increase.
