Limiting salt intake

An August 12 report released by Environment Canada concludes that road salts are toxic to the environment. The results of the 5-year assessment indicate that the road salts that Canada typically uses each year pose a risk to lake and stream ecosystems, groundwater, and a variety of plants and animals.

While the assessment report calls for road salts to be added to Canada s List of Toxic Substances maintained under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), Environment Canada states that it is not considering a ban on road salts, and that road safety issues will be considered when adopting any control measures.
