U.S. storm season off to slow start

Just 11 tornadoes touched down in the United States through 15 March of this year, 6% of the average 178 tornadoes that have usually touched down by that time.

An official with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said that the position of the jet stream and resulting storm track suppressed tornado development this winter, but that the most active season for tornadoes has just started. The United States normally averages 1,200 tornadoes a year.
