About 100 lakes lie under the approximately 4-km-thick ice sheet covering Antarctica. John Priscu, a microbial biologist with Montana State University, said that Lake Vostok, the largest of the known sub-glacial lakes on the continent, will provide the greatest scientific return from research efforts. He made his remarks at a 28 May briefing held at the AGU 2002 Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C.
