Oil and Gas Exploration Wells Drilled to Precambrian Basement in Southeastern Arizona and Southwestern New Mexico

In the Tucson-El Paso area of southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and northwestern Chihuahua, 18 oil and gas exploration wells have been drilled to Precambrian basement. Structural elevations of the Precambrian top in these wells range from +1,626 ft (above sea level) to −11,710 ft (below sea level). However, the Precambrian rises to a surface elevation of over 7,000 ft in the Florida Mountains and is estimated to he at a subsea elevation of about −24,600 ft beneath the recently drilled Phillips No. 1 Sunland Park well in Dona Ana County, New Mexico. A major part of the structural relief may be attributed to Basin and Range normal faulting in Miocene-Pliocene time. A significant part may be attributed to Laramide folding, thrusting, and wrench-faulting. the Phillips No. A1 Tombstone State well in Cochise County, Arizona is the only one that appears to have penetrated a basement-involved thrust; in that well, Precambrian granite overlies Cretaceous sedimentary rocks.
