Over the last 10 years much of the oceanic areas have been surveyed magnetically and its basement rocks dated. New inversion methods have been used to analyze observed anomalies. The magnetic reversal time scale has been extended to 162 million years before present and partially revised. It has been difficult to reconcile the magnetization of recovered basement rocks with the observed anomalies.
