Summary

The cyclotron maser mechanism for the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) proposed by Wu and Lee (1979 and Lee et al. (1980) is reviewed. Moreover, some recent developments concerning the quasilinear saturation of AKR and its energy conversion efficiency are also discussed. These discussions are concerned with the case in which the population of the secondary electrons prevails over that of the energetic electrons. In this paper the limit of zero secondary electrons is discussed briefly. It is found that the dispersion relation of the radiation is significantly modified.
